“Guthrie-Smith is a short trip from Napier but it’s a wonderful place for our students to interact with and be challenged doing a variety of outdoor activities. The students can leave their technology behind and become at one with the environment. They can get involved in activities such as GITs (Group Initiative Challenges) through to High Ropes, Hayley’s Horror, the Flying Kiwi and then down at the Lakes, the water activities from Kayaking and Canadian Canoeing and Raft Building can be run in a safe environment. There is something for everyone. A day is never enough and the growth involved when you spend longer is so valuable for the students in your care. With well qualified staff and a wonderful setting you can’t go wrong with a Guthrie-Smith experience.”

“The Guthrie-Smith Education Centre is a fantastic resource that is found in our backyard. It provides a wide variety of activities set at various levels of challenge, involving activities to develop team building, personal challenge, fun and environmental education. Taradale Intermediate utilised the Arboretum for a whole school environmental education focus in 2013 and the children were fascinated learning all about the trees from around the world. The signage around the walkway was bright and informative and placed at regular intervals to initiate discussion and questions. The teacher resource that has been developed around the Arboretum provides excellent pre and post teaching opportunities.”

“As a school in the local area, we have had great pleasure in being able to have access to Guthrie-Smith. During the past year we have been to Guthrie-Smith for both a camp experience and educational learning. Both experiences have been incredibly valuable. The students were able to extend their knowledge about trees, their survival management as well as the many trees that provide food, and various trees that grow in particular countries. They were able to transfer new information into our current school setting and set environmental goals for the future of Tutira School. The camp experience allowed our entire school to participate in all the activities together, they challenged students of all ages and allowed our senior students to support and lead the juniors.
The environment at Guthrie-Smith is a very pleasant and pleasing one. The buildings and facilities are clean and comfortable; staff are warm, welcoming and friendly. Nothing was ever too much. I would highly recommend using Guthrie-Smith for any EOTC experience.”
