"Autumn has been amazing time at Guthrie-Smith" says George.

Autumn has been amazing at Guthrie-Smith.

It is almost a year now since the Trust took back over the running of the Guthrie Smith Education centre. Booking and management of this facility is now handled by Kirsty and I.

Ryan Campbell has continued with the delivery of all outdoor education programmes although the centre can be used independently by groups provided they have a suitably qualified instructor. There is a lot more opportunity for the use of the centre and we are looking forward to an Open Day for the region’s teachers in early June.

Outside of the use by schools, the Education Centre is available for family groups, tramping clubs, team building days, actually almost anything.

Within the Arboretum, we have had a great growing season and are currently enjoying the last of the autumn glory.

We are currently in the process of putting a QEII covenant over the Hanger block in partnership with the QEII trust and the HBRC. This has involved 560 metres of new fence being erected plus an upgrade elsewhere. The Hanger is a very significant, historic piece of regenerating bush. Guthrie-Smith himself started this process when he shut the gate on this area in the late 1800s and recorded what he saw for over 40 years.

Pruning and weed work continued during May before the focus  turned to planting, my favourite job.

Editor’s note: Earlier this year George dusted off his adventure racing gear and joined a team of veterans for the “Godzone” challenge race based around the Kaikoura area. They came fourth. Congratulations George!!
